Nicotine Prescription Guide

Please note that all information provided is a guide only.

It has always been illegal to supply, sell and gift Nicotine in Australia, however from 1 October 2021, all Nicotine vaping products, such as Nicotine e-cigarettes, Nicotine pods and liquid Nicotine, are Schedule 4 (prescription only) medicines. Consumers require a prescription for all purchases of Nicotine vaping products. This includes purchases from Australian pharmacies and overseas. It remains illegal for other Australian retailers, such as tobacconists, 'vape' shops and convenience stores, to sell consumers Nicotine vaping products.

So how do i get my Nicotine prescription?

You may obtain a prescription by booking an appointment with your local GP and asking for a Nicotine prescription. Some doctors may not prescribe nicotine simply because they are not allowed to, however there are other available options.

Some authorised prescribers are online doctors who may prescribe you a Nicotine prescription. You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and they may ask you several personal questions about your medical and smoking history. Your personal situation will then be assessed and they may provide you with a prescription that is valid for 12months.

Once you have your prescription you will have the option to:

Go to your local pharmacy or a compounding pharmacy:

- Pharmacies doesn’t usually have Nicotine on the shelves when you place an order. There may be a week or 2 that you will have to wait for your prescription to be filled.

- Compounding pharmacies that are certified producers of Nicotine can manufacture customised Nicotine e-liquid. Your doctor will need more detail about the flavours, PG/VG ratio and Nicotine concentration.

Or use the Personal Importation Scheme:

Any medical practitioner who considers it appropriate for their patient to use Nicotine vaping products for smoking cessation can prescribe those products for personal importation.

You may import up to a three month supply of Nicotine with a prescription, per import, but not exceed 15 months supply in a 12-month period.

You must upload a copy of your prescription to the supplier (common places are NZ and China) before your Nicotine is shipped and it is to be enclosed with the package the product is sent in.
